SMART LIGHTS COME OF AGE
In these days of increased airport traffic levels and spiraling energy costs an enhanced method of lighting control can offer cost savings. It also provides one of the first building blocks to the so called "intelligent airport" of the future which will some day see all data processing systems combined into a single network. One of the first applications of systems integration is the marriage of ground surveillance radar with the airfield lighting control system to form a surface movement guidance control system (SMGCS). Integrated tracking and management of aircraft and vehicles on the airfield enhances safety and at busy hubs can raise aircraft capacity by more than 10 more aircraft operations per hour.
