THE USE OF UNIAXIAL CYCLIC COMPRESSION CREEP TESTS FOR PERFORMANCE RELATED SPECIFICATION OF PERMANENT DEFORMATION RESISTANCE OF ASPHALT CONCRETE

As a part of a long term Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division (RHED) research program, aimed at the development of performance related specifications for the permanent deformation resistance of asphalt concrete, a restricted finite element study has been conducted to verify if uniaxial cyclic compression creep testing is representative for the stress path conditions in asphalt concrete top, secondary and base layers. It appears that both in top and secondary asphalt concrete layers, unfavorable stress conditions occur under the edge of the truck tires. The maximum ratio between deviatoric and compressive stresses in secondary layers, which is an important factor in the development of plastic shear deformations, is considerably higher than in top layers.
