AN OPTIMAL ROUTE GUIDANCE ALGORITHM OF A TRAFFIC NETWORK
The traffic control system is constructed to solve the traffic congestion of traffic networks by combining the traffic signal control system and the route guidance system. This paper proposes an optimal route guidance algorithm of a traffic network. An outline of the optimal route guidance algorithm follows. First, an automobile driver inputs his current position and destination from the input device equipped vehicle. Second, the necessary traffic information are input to evaluate the mean travel time of possible routes. Third, the mean travel time of each link is evaluated using the evaluation algorithm for mean travel time. Fourth, the recommended routes from his current position to his destination are obtained using the Dijkstra's algorithm weighted by the mean travel time of each link. Fifth, the recommended routes are output according to the shortness of mean travel time at the output device equipped vehicle. The mean travel time from a driver's current position to his destination is evaluated by summing up the mean travel time of each link. The mean travel time of each link is evaluated in detail using the queue length, average speed, saturation flow, signal control parameters, starting delay, and so on. It is separately evaluated for the straightforward, right-turn, and left-turn directions at signalized intersections. The authors simulate the optimal route guidance algorithm at 12 signalized intersections in Fukuyama, Japan. Using the proposed route guidance algorithm, the recommended routes including the optimal route are output and compared with actual measurement values in the traffic network.
