MOTORIST PERCEPTION OF INFORMATION SERVICES

This paper describes the results of a study on motorist perception of information services by questionnaire surveys and traffic observations. The results of the questionnaire survey show that a fairly high percentage of motorists utilize available message boards--such as character signs, graphic signs and travel time signs--highway advisory radio, and automatic response dial-in telephones, and that they understand the messages provided through those devices and acknowledge the accuracy of the information. Also, the number of motorists who say that they would make detours increases as the congestion length and travel time displayed on the boards at on-ramps increase. The results of traffic observation show that motorists make detours to alternative routes when information of accidents on their route is displayed on expressway message boards. These results suggest that information services assure safe and comfortable travel for motorists and contribute to the efficiency of the road network. Additionally, the credibility of the information is proved by the fact that frequent expressway users utilize the information services more often than occasional users. The effectiveness of detailed information is confirmed by the fact that the percentage of street detours differ depending on the displayed cause of congestion. Younger motorists feel congestion at a higher speed than older motorists. This means that the description of congestion is subjective. This seems to be the reason why motorists prefer data on objective travel time rather than subjective congestion length.
