PAVEMENT QUALITY CONCRETE FOR AIRFIELDS
This Standard supersedes sections of the PSA Standard Specification Clauses for Airfield Pavement Works Part 3 (1989). It sets out the main surfacing specification requirements to meet the demanding characteristics needed for military aircraft use in terms of speed, weight and tyre pressures. The surfaces must have good rideability, good friction and drainage properties, high strengths, be free from loose material, have high resistance to jet blast and fuel spillage and be capable of economic maintenance. There is no provision for reinforcement or dowelled joints. The standard practice on new military airfields is to provide a Drylean Concrete base. The topics covered include materials, design and composition, plant, workmanship and production testing. Trials, the concrete for surface surrounds and a summary of routine tests are also covered. Additional topics such as magnesium sulphate soundness tests, straightedge and sand patch tests and test for manufactured joint fillers are dealt with in appendices. Other appendices contain guidance notes on quality systems and the preparation of job specifications.
