DOWEL STRESS ANALYSIS IN CONCRETE PAVEMENT

Thicknesses of concrete pavement in Thailand which are designed by the Portland Cement Association (PCA) method are 9 inches (23 cm) and 10 inches (25 cm). Dowel bars crossing all transverse joints have a diameter of 1 inch (2.5 cm), which is slightly less than the value suggested by the American Concrete Institute (ACI). ACI recommends a dowl diameter of 1 and 1/4 inch (3.1 cm) for the 9 and 10 inch concrete slabs. Due to the fact that some concrete roads tend to be broken near the expansion joint, an analysis was made to investigate dowel stress. It was found that the dowel of 1 and 1/4 inch in diameter, as the ACI suggests, should be employed for concrete slabs in Thailand. This will be a protection against the danger of truck overloading.
