AN APPLICATION OF TRAFFIC SIMULATION TO CO-DRIVER SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT

To promote traffic efficiency and reduce traffic accidents, intelligent transportation systems have been researched in the United States, Europe, and Japan. The concept of a co-driver system is proposed, which consists of several functions to support a driver under various traffic situations. The principal functions of the co-driver system are traffic flow recognition around itself and autonomous collision avoidance with automatic steering. To study these functions, traffic simulation and traffic simulator, which generates realistic traffic flow, are indispensable. Traffic simulations use to be applied to estimate traffic volume and traffic jam from an infrastructure viewpoint. Recently, the applications of traffic simulation are increased in estimating the effect of intelligent vehicles and vehicle-infrastructures cooperative control. A microscopic traffic simulation model describing the driver's behavior and vehicle motion in detail has been newly constructed to analyze automated driving and collision avoidance mainly on a highway. Using this, the autonomous decision-making logic of co-driver system has been developed. The influences of collision avoidance maneuver on other vehicles were estimated and the effectiveness of co-driver system was confirmed. To examine the vehicle installed with the co-driver system, traffic simulator, as a kind of driving simulator, has been developed. This simulator is unique as an actual vehicle benching type that consists of a graphic generator, a chassis dynamometer, and the traffic simulation as a scenario controller. This simulator enables estimation of collision avoidance system performance and consideration of interference between driver and machine.
