DEVELOPMENTS IN THE REALIZATION OF A PAN-EUROPEAN DIGITAL STREET MAP FOR ITS APPLICATIONS IN EUROPE
This paper focuses on the fact that navigable digital street maps are one of the critical success factors for many intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications in general and for systems like car navigation, route guidance, and traffic management in particular. For a long time data have formed the main bottleneck in the development and in the market introduction of these systems as a successful mass market application in Europe. This paper describes how this bottleneck is solved, which eventually led to the realization of a European standard and availability of a uniform digital street map. Attention is given to the evolution of the concept of car navigation, route guidance, and traffic management and its consequences for the quality and content of digital road maps. Secondly, attention is given to the establishment of a framework and the development of a standard for digital road maps, which made the production of a uniform European navigable digital street map possible. This paper further points out future market possibilities, which are made possible via the availability of uniform European geographical information.
