MAP DATABASE QUALITY MEASUREMENT

Map databases are critical components of many intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications. These include navigation, traffic management, public transit, fleet management, traveler information, and others. High quality map databases are crucial to the successful performance of such applications. Developers and system integrators are at risk of deploying such applications until such time as map database quality can be measured reliably and judged to be suitable. The ability to compare quality between map databases in a consistent and analogous manner is also required in order to make sound decisions about which database to use. This paper presents a statistically-based approach for map database quality measurement. It identifies the key attributes and features of map databases that have a direct bearing on application performance. It also describes methods for evaluating these attributes and features in order to derive a quantitative profile of the database quality. This profiling method, in turn, may be used to compare map databases with similar geographic coverage and content. Finally, the status of quality measurement standardization activities is summarized.
