ANALYSIS OF SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY YOUNG PASSENGER CAR DRIVERS BASED ON ORIGINAL POLICE REPORTS
In 1993 the personal injury accidents caused by young drivers were analyzed in detail, starting from a statistical database. The results show that of the accidents caused by 17-24 year old passenger car drivers, the greatest proportion occurs because of the inadequate selection of speed. Both the increased tendency to take risks, characteristic of young people and the inexperience in driving are playing a part in this. The data show at the same time that among the causes of accidents caused by young beginner drivers, the proportion of not yielding, overtaking, inappropriate turning, too little headway is not higher than among the accidents caused by older passenger car drivers. The results of investigations made in Denmark and in the Netherlands indicate that by the analysis of original police reports it is possible to reveal essential data related to the details of the process leading to the accident.
