PRESSUREMETER TESTING IN GROUND INVESTIGATION. PART 1 - SITE OPERATIONS

The information obtained form a pressuremeter test is the in situ ground response to an increase in pressure. This response, usually shown as a stress-strain curve, depends on the type of probe, method of installation and test procedure. The curve can be interpreted to produce directly either design parameters using empirical rules or more fundamental ground properties using simple mathematical models. This paper, which is divided into three parts covering (a) site operations; (b) interpretation and (c) applications, gives an introduction to the practice of pressuremeter testing and references to relevant guidelines. Site operations covers the type of pressuremeters available and installation, calibration and testing procedures. (M'enard, stress-controlled, strain-controlled and stress and strain controlled tests). Most of this is based on commercially accepted practices which are currently being codified.
