A STUDY ON CHARACTERISTICS OF WORLD-FIRST FLOATING CITY AQUAPOLIS
During the 6-month period from July 20th 1975 till January 18th 1976, Aquapolis was attacked by typhoons 14 times. However, it was open to visitors at the high rate of 95 per cent of the time, and received 3.5 million visitors. In putting the Aquapolis on display at the Exposition, the Japanese Government sought for a structure capable of maintaining a high degree of safety as a floating city at the typhoon-ridden island, free of natural environment pollution and befitting the theme of the Exposition. As a result, it was concluded that a semi-submerged closed-system marine structure would be most suitable. This paper reports on the results of various model tests conducted in designing the marine structure and the results of sea trials performed after its completion. During the Exposition period data was gathered on sea and weather conditions and on the oscillation of the Aquapolis for future use in planning floating cities.
