DESIGNING THE CONTROL AND SIMULATION OF EGR
Ford is developing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control for its future engines in association with Mechadyne. Ford commissioned Mechadyne to develop an EGR control strategy that combines the speed of response of valve position control with the disturbance rejection of a MAF control strategy. This article describes the EGR strategy and the MATRIXX simulation tool which contributes to its implementation. To speed the development of the strategy, it was decided to develop an engine system model that represented all the engine's mechanical and thermodynamic features. As a full simulation would have taken a very long time, a simplified engine model was constructed, combining physical principles and carefully chosen data from a test engine. All the models were constructed using MATRIXX simulation software, developed by Integrated Systems, which enables complex systems to be simulated and documented in a user-friendly graphical environment. The function blocks used in MATRIXX are very flexible, and can be built in various ways. The simulation covered heat transfer, flow rates, volume behaviour, and gas temperatures and pressures, and modelled some other items. The work aims to give objective insights into several strategies for EGR control and provide the initial gain settings for a new advanced EGR controller.
