TEACHING TRANSIT THE IMPORTANCE OF PRINCIPLES. PRESENTATION AT WORKSHOP SESSION ON: THE CHANGING ENVIRONMENT IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING
A hypothetical organization is proposed that has broken out of all the boxes and established a new way of doing business. To do this, the employees of this organization live by a set of principles. Simply stated these are: (1) We move quicker when we share a common direction and a sense of community; (2) We stand by each other in tough times; and (3) It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and it pays to take turns sharing leadership. These principles are applied to "geese" and it is shown that, if we break out of the mold and look at innovative models, even look at geese as a model for organizational change, we will develop real strategies for innovation in transit.
