SHIP MANEUVERING SIMULATOR WITH VISUAL DISPLAY SYSTEM AND ITS APPLICATION

A visual maneuvering simulator which can reproduce the vision in similar conditions to the actual sight in view of navigators on board a ship recently has been developed by IHI. The most sophisticated part of the simulator from a technical point of view is the visual display system which can project the prospect viewed from a wheelhouse and a target ship in motion as they actually appear. This system can be completed only by integrating the following three factors: 1. A simulation program which can compute precisely the motions of ships of any type, taking into account the influence of wave, wind, current, etc. 2. An optical instrument system which can display the variety of changing image on a screen. 3. The servo control system connecting the former two with a high degree of precision and also with dead slow action in concert with the ship motion. Outlined in this paper is the whole aspect of the simulator together with some examples of its application.
