STUDY OF THE MANEUVERABILITY OF WIDE BEAM TANKERS: RESULTS OF A RESTRAINED MODEL TEST WITH SERIES MODELS OF L/B RATIO

This report presents the measuring and analyzing systems for the forced yawing test and an example of the test results on the ship models employed in the previous tests. On the basis of the experimental results on the stability derivatives, the mechanism of maneuvering characteristics of the series models is clarified. It is recognized that the values of the steering quality indices calculated through the derivatives show a similar tendency to the variations due to the changes in ship configurations as those obtained from a Z-maneuver test. Further, in this report, a practical procedure to predict non-linear derivatives of a second power of drift angle B2 is developed. In this method, a correction factor defined as the ratio of a crossflow drag coefficient to the nonlinear component of a coefficient of normal force acting on a ship model moving obliquely is introduced, the value of the ratio being determined directly from the experiments.
