THE IMPACT OF THE TRANSPORT SYSTEM ON THE ENVIRONMENT
The paper reviews the basic principles governing the development of the transport system in the Czech Republic, a strategic element in European transport, where the authorities are anxious not to repeat the dependence on road transport of most Western European countries. Emphasis should be on a sustainable system with public transport the dominant mode, especially over long distances, and road transport mainly used for irregular journeys and inaccessible locations. The present state of public transport in the Republic is outlined and problems identified. The adverse effects of the road transport infrastructure on local geology and animal life are examined. The various forms of pollution due to exhaust emissions are discussed and examples are given of the amounts present in the Czech Republic. For the covering abstract see IRRD 877018.
