THE EVOLUTION AND EVALUATION OF DYNAMIC ROUTE GUIDANCE SYSTEMS
The past decade has seen considerable activity in the development and testing of a variety of in-vehicle dynamic route guidance (DRG) systems around the world. This activity has been prompted mainly by the substantial advances in communications and electronic technologies, coupled with the findings that significant savings could be made in journey times, costs, accidents and 'stress' through the provision of efficient DRG advice. This paper traces the recent, current and likely future evolution of DRG systems with particular reference to developments in Europe, and it also presents results from a major simulation exercise to evaluate the design and performance of DRG systems.
