EXPERIMENTAL VEHICLES AND COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM FOR HEADWAY AND LATERAL CONTROL SYSTEM
The headway and lateral control system is one component in the bid to make the ARTS concept a reality. The system, designed to enable road traffic to flow more smoothly and to increase safety, is classified into three levels: the warning and information dissemination level, the driving assistance level, and the automatic driving level. The method of establishing consecutive communication road-vehicle will be crucial in this system. Currently, leakage coaxial cables are being tested as a possible medium. So far, investigations into experimental vehicles and communication systems have addressed the first level, namely the warning and information dissemination level. The first step involved building and verifying an experimental system for a danger ahead warning function and for an emergency report function. In this system, the vehicle sends information on its position, speed, and emergency reports to local processors on the road. The information generated ahead on accidents, fallen objects, or traffic congestion is transmitted to vehicles behind. This paper outlines the experimental vehicles, the communication system, communication protocol, and the results of experiments so far. Plans for future experiments are described.
