UNDERGROUND CAR PARKING NETWORK SYSTEM
In Hiroshima City, large-scale redevelopment was carried out in preparation to host the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games. As a part of the redevelopment plan, the nation's first underground carparking network system was constructed. This network system makes multiple independent parking lots function as one large parking lot by connecting them as one body by an underground passage. Its objectives are as follows: 1) to reduce the traffic congestion by placing the entrance to the network at a location away from areas with heavy traffic congestion; 2) to introduce a clear sign guidance system to improve the utilization efficiency of the parking; and 3) to provide a comfortable underground space via improved lighting, ventilation, and emergency measures. A sign guidance system was adopted that employs neurotechnology that has proved useful in other industrial applications. This control guidance system plays an important role to attain the goals of the network system. The network is structured in such a way that an incoming vehicle cannot turn back. Therefore to control the number of incoming cars at an appropriate level, it is necessary to have a learning and prediction function to keep a reasonable level of volume of incoming vehicles. As a result, neurotechnology was introduced. The introduction of the control guidance system allows the flexible provision of information based on the state of incoming and outgoing vehicles at each parking lot that varies minute by minute due to various factors. It also brought such merits as "provision of comfort" and "care for security and safety" to the users, and such merits as "improvement of parking utilization efficiency" to parking area managers.
