NEW FEDERAL REGULATIONS DEMAND GREATER EDUCATION OF HIGHWAY SIGN CREWS
Federal highway officials chose small sign supports as the first of the roadside obstacles to be required to meet the new crash test standards. By July of 1998, suppliers of all other roadside obstacles will be expected to meet the new guidelines. In 1989, the FHWA also recognized similar standards issued by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, known as the NCHRP 350 criteria. More importantly the FHWA memo formally sanctioned the new criteria for projects advertised in the National Highway System (NHS) after January 1, 1995. Although not mandatory, the FHWA is encouraging highway departments to evaluate the need to retrofit breakaway small sign support installations.
