DELIVERY OF URBAN TRANSPORT IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA: CASE STUDY OF ACCRA, GHANA

This paper examines the urban transportation system in a typical Sub-Saharan city - Accra, Ghana. A description of its demand and supply characteristics is carried out. Deficiencies in the operation of the system are discussed and suggestions of possible actions that should be taken towards the development of coherent urban transport policies are given. The focus of these suggestions is the establishment of a transportation data collection agency to collect and collate relevant data on the transportation system. This is fundamental to any analysis that is to be done. The need to tackle urban transportation problems in a more scientific way and for producing trained local transportation professionals is also emphasized.
