DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF BERTHING FORCES
The berthing forces are considered in terms of equipollent static forces. The direction, distribution and intensities of such forces are computed on the basis of assumptions, regarding the ship displacement tonnage, approach velocity, and approach angle. A reliable method of assessing the design values for berthing forces is proposed. The theory of the proposed method is presented with minimum mathematics. The related experimental work and some observations are discussed. The studied pier consisted of rigid reinforced concrete platforms resting on piles; accommodating medium size general cargo and passenger ships; equipped with simple inefficient fenders.
