OCTOBER TRAFFIC DEATHS DECREASE FOUR PERCENT

Motor-vehicle deaths in October 1994 totaled 3,830 a decrease of 4% from the October 1993 total of 3,970. Deaths for the first 10 months of 1994 totaled 34,570, 1% lower than the 1993 total of 34,820. Disabling injuries through October are estimated to be nearly 1.7 million. These are injuries that result in disability beyond the day of the collision; they do not include minor injuries which probably numbered twice as many. The cost of motor-vehicle collisions for 1994 is estimated to be approximately $137.6 billion. Based on preliminary vehicle mileage reports for this year, the estimated annual mileage death rate is 1.8 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
