FRACTURE MECHANICS AND SHIPS
It is stated that limited room is available for usefully applying linear elastic fracture mechanics in commerical ships, except in the field of fatigue crack growth. General yielding fracture mechanics are somewhat more valuable. Then crack opening displacement (COD) is a sufficiently accurate parameter for static loading conditions. Whether these are sufficiently representative for ship loadings is doubtful. In connection to brittle fracture propagation and arrest there is a need for methods of analysis for welded plate-stiffener assemblies. The input information is mostly given in terms of Charpy-test results.
