ADVANCED TRAFFIC INFORMATION SERVICE (ATIS)

Advanced Traffic Information Service (ATIS) is a traffic information providing enterprise established as a joint venture by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and private enterprises. Information providing began February 10, 1994. Conventional traffic information provision had been unable to cover the increasingly sophisticated needs of drivers. However, ATIS can send wide and detailed traffic information to drivers as needed. Traffic information is collected by the Metropolitan Police Department, the Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation, etc., and is received by the ATIS center in real time. It is distributed then to the ATIS terminals in offices, homes, or automobiles via public lines or exclusive lines. Traffic information, such as traffic congestion, is superimposed on electronic maps appearing on computer screens. ATIS featured navigation systems get the information via mobile telephone, and drivers can get effective information at any place and at any time. Also, when the interactive function is used, optimum route guide to a destination is provided upon individual request from a terminal, making use of dynamic route calculation under the central processing system in ATIS.
