STRENGTH OF SHIP STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
This paper discusses how the finite element method may be extended to provide the necessary analytical tools for determining the failure loads of complex structural arrangements typified by a ship structure. Two areas are considered through which failure can occur; these are elastic or plastic buckling of plate structures and the elasto-plastic behavior of structures subjected to loading in the plane of the plate. A method is then suggested whereby the linear stepwise procedure developed for an elasto-plastic stress analysis can be modified to consider the effect of local buckling or yielding of elements of the structure on the subsequent overall behavior of a complex structural arrangement.
