THE DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOMATIC INFORMATION SERVICE SYSTEM ON EXPRESSWAY TRAFFIC IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

An increase in the number of foreign motorists in Japan is anticipated along with the ongoing worldwide trend toward borderlessness. The Hanshin Expressway Public Corporation (HEPC) investigated the possibility of establishing an international traffic information provision service in its traffic control system over 5 years. Based on the results of these studies, the HEPC has developed an automatic information service system to meet the demand of foreign motorists for road traffic information in English and has been operating the system since September 1994 when the Kansai International Airport was opened. In this system, computers compose sound elements and perform automatic English text editing of real-time traffic information obtained from the HEPC's traffic control system. With this system, foreign motorists can obtain traffic information on the expressway in English any time by calling the traffic control center. By making a further study of the standard English syntax developed for road traffic information, the application and expansion of this system to languages other than English is intended.
