METROPOLITAN EXPRESSWAY RADIO SYSTEM

The Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation has established a system called the Metropolitan Expressway Radio System to expand the amount of traffic information offered. This new system automatically gives drivers consistently updated, detailed information regarding traffic conditions using the human voice. Traffic information is sent along the roadway via roadside communication terminals and antennas, which are installed at strategic points. Information is gathered, processed, and broadcasted to cars traveling along the route using a frequency of 1620 kHz. The information broadcast is updated at 5-minute intervals, and includes details about accidents, road construction, congestion, and estimated travel time to major destinations. The real-time information is very effective for route selection and smoother driving conditions, making drivers more comfortable behind the wheel. The system operates on a 24-hour a day basis and utilizes a duplex system to guarantee reliability. The system features a voice offering method, allowing detailed information to be given in an understandable manner. Every message has an output provision time of 60 seconds, and offers a variety of information that cannot be offered by roadway information boards. The system uses a speech synthesizing method by which voice recordings are divided into phrases and registered as fragments; then processed and composed into sentences. These sentences are linked naturally, and thus, easy to understand. The system has proven highly effective in its performance.
