ESTIMATION OF POSITIONING ACCURACY OF NAVIGATION SYSTEMS USING GPS IN URBAN AREAS
Car navigation systems using global positioning system (GPS) are gaining popularity. In urban areas, GPS signals are blocked by buildings or other obstructions frequently, so hybrid navigation systems that combine GPS with a dead reckoning (DR) system have become popular. A method is proposed to estimate the positioning accuracy of the hybrid navigation systems considering blocking effects in urban areas. The method has three considerations. First, in the estimation of the positioning accuracy, not only visibility but also fade duration distribution of the GPS signals must be considered. Propagation characteristics in urban areas are calculated using parameters, such as mean height and density of buildings and street width. Second, pseudorange data of GPS satellites and output data of DR sensors are generated, assuming that a vehicle equipped with the hybrid navigation system is traveling on the street beside buildings. The data of the GPS satellites are generated according to the visibility and the fade duration based on the parameters, directions of the satellites, and the movement of the car. Finally, the positioning error is calculated from a true vehicle position and a solution of the hybrid navigation system, and the positioning accuracy is estimated by Monte Carlo simulation. The positioning accuracy of the hybrid navigation system is compared in several kinds of environments using the proposed method. A discussion of degradation of accuracy caused by blocking effects is included.
