WAVE OVERTOPPING DETECTION BY IMAGE PROCESSING

Surface transportation facilities are damaged by wave overtopping in coastal areas. To prevent damage, countermeasures work for wave dissipation. An automated wave overtopping detection system was developed by image processing. Trigger points can be set in any area of the pictures of the video camera. The system detects optional size of wave overtopping automatically in the scene of the video camera. One to four optional time-interval continuous still pictures, including just before trapping, are transmitted just after trapping wave overtopping. This optimal time interval after trapping wave overtopping makes this system able to detect the highest wave by still video pictures. This system was set at Araiso seashore area on National Highway Route 336 to certify long-term reliability. Wave overtopping information is obtained automatically just after triggering through telephone networks. Data transferred from Araiso is stored in a computer to search the size and frequency of wave overtopping. Compiled data is related to synoptic weather charts and sea bed topology to forecast overtopping waves and to design countermeasures.
