REINFORCED SOIL
This special supplement aims at the better understanding and appreciation of the theory and practice of working in reinforced soil by civil engineers and experts on soil mechanics. Reinforced soil is used in a wide range of civil engineering structures, including: (1) vertical reinforced soil walls and abutments; (2) steep-sided embankments and cuttings; (3) slope stabilisation; and (4) basal reinforcement of foundations for low ground-bearing structures constructed on soft ground. The introductory article assesses the advantages and applications of soil reinforcement, and continues with an article on the history of the development of reinforced soil from ancient times to the present. Several articles discuss British Standard BS8006 "Code of practice for strengthened/reinforced soils and other fills", which contains guidance for engineers and recommendations for good practice, but departs from the limit equilibrium methods widely used in UK practice; its design approach is compared with previous design practice in the UK, France, and Germany. Case studies are given of the use of reinforced soil walls for: (1) resolving soft ground problems for roads; (2) motorway widening; (3) preventing landslides; (4) retaining the slope of a car park; and (5) shrub and tree cover.
