A VIBRATIONAL ANALYSIS OF A PIN-DISC SYSTEM WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SQUEAL NOISE IN DISC-BRAKES
Expressions for the receptances and characteristic frequencies of a rotating disc under forced oscillations, using bessel functions, are developed. These are combined with similar expressions, using a finite element technique, for the pin system, to give the characteristic frequencies and modal shapes of the coupled system. The fundamental resonance frequencies of the coupled system, observed for a series of experimental results, compare favourably with theoretical predictions. Generally these coupled frequencies are at, or near to, an anti-resonance of the free disc. An essentially torsional vibratory mode of the pin system is observed to be needed in order to generate noise producing vibratory patterns on the disc. The line of action of the resultant force on the pin, in relation to the torsional centre of the pin system, is shown to be the main criterion in determining its vibrational mode. /Author/ /TRRL/
