NOISE GENERATED AT THE TYRE-ROAD INTERFACE
A review is made of recent published work on the airborne road noise produced by truck tyres including the effects of speed, tread pattern, road surface texture, tyre tread materials and load. New results are reported of the tyre-road noise produced by car tyres; these are both in the form of frequency spectra and of sound level meter values. In the case of car tyres the measurements have again shown the advantages of certain types of road surface. The tyre variables investigated include the effect of sectional width, of sectional aspect ratio and of inflation pressure. The information obtained is sufficient to give an indication of the minimum possible tyre-road noise which, with current knowledge, would be generated by a vehicle of given weight travelling at a given speed by optimising both tyre and road texture parameters. /Author/ /TRRL/
