NOISE REDUCTION OF LARGE EARTHMOVING VEHICLES
The large earthmoving vehicle can present a noise problem both to the operator and to the general public. In this paper the results of a joint program between the CEGB and the manufacturers are described which ameliorate both effects. The reduction of internal cab noise to an adequate level has been relatively simple although a further reduction may still be desirable. External noise radiation is quickly reduced in the first instance by fitting effective exhaust silencers which are not always used on this type of vehicle during site work. Subsequent panelling of the engine and transmission units produced a gradual reduction in BS 3425 noise level as it became more complete but it was apparent that a lower limit was being approached. The existence of such a limit was found to be caused by gear noise from the transmission system, the complete enclosure of which was not practicable. It is concluded that for this kind of vehicle a BS 3425 level of approximately 90 dba is achievable by simple panelling techniques. However, the cegb's future requirement of an 85 dba noise level will require a detailed modification of the engine, transmission and cooling system design whilst care will also have to be taken to avoid any significant increase in maintenance and servicing times.(a).
