FIRE ELEMENT STRESS ANALYSIS AS AN AID TO THE DESIGN OF AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENTS
The finite element method has been used for the stress analysis of numerous automotive components manufactured within the Lucas group. The results allowed both failure predictions and suggestions for design improvement to be made for each component. Three specific examples are included for problems arising from basically different areas of vehicle design. A diesel fuel injector nozzle, a handbrake linkage lever and a roller clutch sleeve design are the problems described. The reasons for the investigation, the specification of the problem, and a brief interpretation of the results, are discussed for each case. General observations are made, from the stress analyst user viewpoint, on the application of a finite element computer program as a design aid to be used directly by any designer /TRRL/ conference see IRRD no. 219564.
