ON THE APPLICATION OF A RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY TO TRAFFIC SIGNAL SETTINGS
The author discusses a response surface methodology put forward by Montgomery, Talavage and Mullen in 1972 as an aid to improving traffic signal settings in a street network. As an example of this approach these authors applied the methodology to a six-intersection street network, and defined 15 different problems for the network involving both controllable and fixed variables. Some comments concerning the results of the example and the approach in general are presented in this short communication. It is suggested that more effort will be required to apply effectively such a methodology in the traffic systems field. /TRRL/
