ROCKY ROAD FOR ST GOTTHARD TUNNEL
An account is given of the construction of the St. Gotthard road tunnel, comparisons being with the similarly routed rail tunnel. The author describes the work involved which includes the provision of a parallel safety tunnel, connections between the two tunnels, air ducts and four ventilation shafts. A geological survey carried out during the building of the rail tunnel has been useful in predicting rock conditions. The use of the first "sliding floor" in Europe is described and brief details given of construction methods and equipment. /TRRL/
