THE SEVILLE MOTORWAY CONFERENCE. EXPANSION JOINTS IN STRUCTURES. THEME 3
GIRNATE AUTOSTRADALI DI SEVIGLIA I GIUNTI DI DILATAZIONE NELLE OPERE D'ARTE. TEMA 3
Recent statistics from 30 repaired viaducts show that in 79% of cases the damage and deterioration was caused mainly by the poor waterproofing characteristics of the expansion joints. An illustrated article reviews the development of expansion joints used on roads and bridge structures in Italy. Details are given of the materials used, and of the design and construction of modern weatherproof expansion joints in accordance with Italian standards as specified in CNR Circular 1011. /TRRL/
