THE SEVILLE MOTORWAY CONFERENCE. EXPANSION JOINTS IN STRUCTURES. THEME 3. FRENCH REPORT
GIORNATE STRADALI DI SIVIGLIA. I GIUNTI DI DILATAZIONE NELLE OPERE D'ARTE. TEMA 3. RELAZIONE FRANCESE
This paper describes current practice in highway joint construction, and reviews recent road construction methods which permit a reduction in the number of joints in bridge structures. Observations over a 12 year period of motorway structures in France, showed no adverse effects on joint-free underpass slabs up to 30M long. Overpass decks of from 40-50M long have likewise shown no ill effects from the absence of expansion joints. The design and construction of w type and comb type joints (most used in France), are described and illustrated. /TRRL/
