THE ROLE OF THE BICYCLE IN THE CONNECTING URBAN AND RURAL TRANSPORT

DE ROL VAN DE FIETS IN HET VERBINDEND STADS- EN STREEKVERVOER

To get an insight into the role of the bicycle in the before and after transport of the connecting bus, tram, and metro transport, the role which the bicycle can play to come to the stopping places of the public transport is studied. The study consists of a literature review, an inventarisation of the stopping places of the public transport lines, an interview of the users of the public transport lines, and an inventory at the public transport companies. For 60% of the passengers of the public transport lines studied the bicycle is a real possible transport mode to go to the stopping places. Now only 14% use the bicycle. When adequate provisions are made for more comfort for the cyclists such as guarded bicycle parking places or bicycle sheds, and when the public transport lines are made longer and more integrated into the residential areas, it is expected that this percentage will grow into 25 - 30%.
