ROAD SAFETY IN CANADA: 2001 - FACING THE CHALLENGE

The purpose of the Symposium was to: identify issues and challenges for the effective delivery of road safety programs relating to the road user, the road, and the vehicle; foster greater awareness of existing efforts within the road safety community; and, encourage and support stakeholders. This publication is a compendium of the results of the Symposium. It includes copies of the formal paper presentations, summaries of the results of the numerous workshops, ideas put forward by means of an informal "town square" bulletin board as well as lists of the delegates and workshop moderators. Most of this reference material is contained in a series of appendices. Five priority issues and a set of recommended solutions emerged from the series of interdisciplinary workshops that progressively refined and clarified this final product. They are as follows: communication and cooperation; education and awareness; enforcement; data; and action plans, goals and targets. (A)
