AN ALTERNATIVE PROCEDURE FOR ESTIMATING SPEED DISTRIBUTION PARAMETERS ON MOTORWAYS AND SIMILAR ROADS
A method is given for estimating speed distribution parameters on motorways and similar roads based on counts made from a moving vehicle. The method follows the same observational procedure as that recently proposed by Duncan, but provides an analytical solution rather than a graphical method for obtaining the speed distribution parameters. In addition, the distributions of speeds in both time and space are examined, and the relationship between these is obtained for an Erlang speed distribution curve. Sampling estimates for speed distribution parameters are obtained from a simulation model. /Author/ /TRRL/
