DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF ROAD TANKERS FOR THE CARRIAGE OF DANGEROUS PRODUCTS
The article summarises the main requirements of the statutory regulations covering the carriage of liquids of a dangerous nature both in the U.K. and overseas. The construction of type I and II tanks allowed in the regulations are described; most tanker manufacturers now conform to these requirements. The thickness and strength of the metal used is defined; pre-service and maintenance tests are described. Methods of filling and discharging are recommended, the protection of fittings required in the event of overturning is illustrated. Maximum values of vapour pressure for particular types are given. A summary of regulations regarding marine transportation is also given. Apart from the regulations regarding the tank construction, the author mentions further constructional requirements for vehicles designed for the carriage of dangerous goods. /TRRL/
