INTERLOCKING PAVING - THE FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETIC ADVANTAGES
The author reviews the use of concrete paving blocks which although widespread in Europe has largely been ignored in the U.K. Concrete blocks are compared favourably with other pavement materials and properties described which enable them to operate with the maximum of efficiency under a range of traffic conditions. Properties discussed include durability, resistance to frost and chemical attack, skid resistance and the variety in colour which can be used in road marking. A study of the paving technologies of Germany and Denmark is described and the subsequent formation of the Interlocking Paving Association (Interpave). The aims of the association are listed: (1) to manufacture all paving blocks to a recognised standard; (2) to lay down specifications to ensure a satisfactory job and (3) to ensure continuity of supply. /TRRL/
