SILENCE IS GOLDEN - OR IS IT
The article discusses the present policy of bus quietening pursued by successive government departments and, whilst admitting that heavy vehicle noise has increased, suggests that this has been mainly a feature of high-output lorry engines rather than buses. Attempts to reduce the noise level of buses by wrapping the engine compartment with an insulation material and also fitting a bottom plate to engine compartments are thought more likely to increase the fire risk. It is thought unfair that bus operators should incur higher capital costs for quietened buses resulting in higher fares with very little environmental improvement. It is proposed that if a reduction in bus engine noise is really necessary, this could be brought about by developing low-power engines of better detail design, in which case the cost should be borne by the government for the benefit of the general community. /TRRL/
