EFFECT OF LUBRICANTS AND MASKING OF TEXTURE ON ABRASION OF RUBBER
Using experimental techniques of measuring abrasion, the scale of texture responsible for the abrasion of the rubber, in sliding, is estimated. The effect of size of the texture is assessed by conducting experiments on the same surface, and eliminating the fine scales by lubrication with liquids of different viscosity. From a knowledge of the size of the texture involved in abrasion and the theoretical energy losses in rubber during sliding, it is concluded that the consequent temperature build-up at the surface layers by the finer scales of texture during sliding is an important factor influencing abrasion. Since the friction developed is independent of the scale of the texture involved, it may be ideally possible to have a surface designed which generates sufficient friction and at the same time produces very little abrasion by eliminating certain of the very fine scales of texture. /Author/ /TRRL/
