INFLUENCE OF BITUMEN AGEING AND DEGREE OF FILLERISATION ON THE CRACKING OF A BITUMINOUS LAYER
INCIDENCIA DEL ENVEJECIMIENTO DEL ASFALTO Y DEL GRADO DE FILLERIZACION EN EL FISURAMIENTO DE UNA CAPETA ASFALTICA
A study is made of the causes of the ageing of an urban road surfacing after 27 years of satisfactory service. Details are given of the methods used in the study and of the results obtained; bitumen ageing is the main cause of cracks in the bitumen carpet; time-related changes in bitumen composition are due to a loss of volatile ingredients and to oxidation; increase in the quantity of filler following aggregate deterioration due to traffic contributed to the instability of the bituminous mixture. /TRRL/
