STRUCTURAL DESIGN TO RESIST VEHICLE IMPACT AND OTHER ACCIDENTAL DYNAMIC LOADS
DIMENSIONERING FOER PAAKOERNING OCH ANDRA DYNAMISKA OLYCKSLATER
In recent loading and safety regulations, increasing attention has been paid to accidental loads. However, if dynamic effects are ignored, specification of only an equivalent static strength may result in strong but brittle structures. In considering the ability of a structure to resist vehicle impacts and other accidental dynamic loads, the deformation of a structure must be studied and the energy absorbed related to the masses involved and their changes in velocity. It is no good to specify the size of accidental loads; it is deformation and force redistribution capacity which are essential. The impacting vehicle may be seen as a mass-spring system; the "spring" cannot, however, be regarded as of no mass. The structure hit is not immobile, and its movement must be considered. Local failure must not occur. Computer programs are available for such problems, based on Newton's force equation. It is easiest to regard collisions as an impact problem and to consider the energy balance. The plastic force produced by an element can be determined, but to find the energy stored in the structure, the maximum deformation must be known. This is difficult. Some views are given on the "limiting deformation" of steel and rc beams. /TRRL/
