ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE SOIL COMPOSITION

In zonal soils such as those consisting of silt and sulphide soil in thin layers it can prove difficult to determine which soil type dominates from a geotechnical point of view. This article describes two methods for determining the structure of undisturbed samples. One method is to cut the sample with a thin thread and then study the layer sequence and layer thicknesses. In this way layers with a thickness of one-tenth of a millimetre could be identified. Layers of some hundredths of a millimetre were distinguishable by using a microscope. Infrared film proved to give more satisfactory pictures of the cut surface than ordinary colour films. The second method applied was to take an x-ray of the sample while it was still in its cylinder. In this test soil layers with a thickness of half a millimetre could be identified which is considered to be satisfactory. The x-ray method was preferred because it gave a better basis for further testing of the sample. For soil classification purposes a standardized picture table with a code system is presented. /TRRL/
